Why are volunteer firefighters so obsessive?

I know that we need to have them around, but a lot of them that I see hang out at the vfd constantly, put all of these lights and sirens on their vehicles, I've even seen a few quit their jobs. I just don't know what makes people become totally obsessed with something that they don't even get paid for. Maybe they think they're cool? Idk
